Watertown's growing business community, major development projects and economic future were among the topics discussed during a recent episode of WCA-TV's Beyond the Headline, featuring the city's senior planner for economic development, Erin Rathe.

Rathe discussed her role in supporting Watertown's more than 1,400 businesses, including over 90 restaurants, and helping business owners navigate permitting, find available commercial space and access resources to support growth.

Drawing on her own experience as a small-business owner, Rathe emphasized the importance of digital marketing, collaboration among neighboring businesses and city initiatives designed to attract customers, particularly during ongoing construction projects.

The conversation also explored the future of Watertown Square, where planned improvements aim to create a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly downtown. Rathe highlighted the importance of connecting the Community Path, incorporating public art and encouraging new housing and retail opportunities to strengthen the local economy.

Looking beyond the city's established life sciences sector, Rathe also discussed efforts to attract emerging industries, including climate technology, artificial intelligence and robotics.
