A Living Ceremonial Tree Takes Root at the Commander’s Mansion During Merry Mingle

WATERTOWN – Watertown’s Merry Mingle returned to the Commander’s Mansion for its second year, featuring expanded programming and broader collaboration across city departments, local schools, and community partners. Organizers said the event—formerly known as the Whoville Jubilee—has continued to grow in both size and scope, transforming the historic mansion and its grounds into a hub of holiday activity.

Inside the Commander’s Mansion, the Watertown library expanded its “Holidays Around the World” programming, dedicating multiple rooms to international holiday traditions from countries including Italy, Armenia, and Germany. Additional cultural displays lined the hallways, encouraging visitors to explore the building while learning about different customs and celebrations.

Several city departments played key roles in the event. The Watertown Department of Public Works supported decorations, assisted with children’s activities, and planted a permanent ceremonial “living” tree on the grounds of the Commander’s Mansion. Organizers said the tree replaces the need for a cut tree each year and reflects the city’s goals around sustainability, climate resilience, and long-term stewardship of public spaces.

Outside the mansion, Watertown Recreation hosted an artificial snowball fight on the West Lawn, while Watertown Public Schools contributed performances from an all-city chorus and orchestra. Organizers described Merry Mingle as a growing, citywide effort that brings residents together at one of Watertown’s most recognizable landmarks.
