Mount Auburn Cemetery Opens Applications for 2025 Artist-in-Residence Program

Watertown, MA – Mount Auburn Cemetery, a national leader in artist residencies within cemetery spaces, is now accepting applications for its 2025 Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program. Established in 2014, this innovative initiative invites artists to immerse themselves in the historic landscape of the Cemetery to create original, site-specific works that offer fresh perspectives on Mount Auburn.

Program Overview Selected artists will craft a unique deliverable—be it a product, program, or event—rooted in their experience at Mount Auburn. These works will eventually be shared with the public, with presentation details tailored collaboratively between the artist and the AiR Program manager.

Eligibility Applicants must reside close enough to the Cemetery (located at 580 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA) to engage deeply with its environment. Artists from all backgrounds, identities, and experience levels are encouraged to apply.

Residency Details Projects must adhere closely to the accepted proposal’s subject, scale, and scope. While minor adjustments are permissible, significant changes are not allowed. The residency runs from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. Artists will receive grants ranging from $500 to $4,000 to support their work.

Application Information Applications are due by February 1, 2025, with notifications of acceptance sent by March 1, 2025. Interested artists can review past projects from the 2024 cohort to understand the range of possibilities.
