Mount Auburn Cemetery has opened a new Welcome Center at its historic Egyptian Revival Gateway, creating a central starting point for families, visitors and neighbors exploring the cemetery.

The Gateway was first constructed in 1832, one year after Mount Auburn was founded, and later rebuilt in Quincy granite. Cemetery officials said the new center restores the Gateway's historic role as a place of welcome and orientation while improving the visitor experience.

The center offers maps, wayfinding assistance and help locating graves, along with information about Mount Auburn's history, horticulture, art, wildlife and programming. It also includes a small gift shop and a new bluestone plaza where guided tours can begin.
