More than 230 residents have signed a petition calling for a vote of no confidence in Watertown Public Schools' Director of Student Services, bringing renewed attention to concerns surrounding the district's special education services.
At the June 1 School Committee meeting, parents and community members used the public forum to share personal experiences and urge district leaders to address issues related to communication, transparency, service delivery, and trust within the Student Services Department.
Several speakers referenced findings from the independent Athena K12 review, which identified concerns including communication challenges, inconsistent practices, and perceptions of administrative gatekeeping within the district's special education system.
School Committee members acknowledged the concerns raised by families and emphasized the need to rebuild trust and improve the district's special education programs.
Superintendent Dr. Dede Galdston said ongoing listening sessions with families and staff will help shape a special education improvement plan scheduled to be presented later this month.
