New Watertown Middle School Design Unveiled as Project Nears Key Vote

Residents got their most detailed look yet at the proposed new Watertown Middle School during the June 17 School Building Committee meeting.

Architects from AI3 presented updated designs featuring a new main entrance on Bemis Street, expanded outdoor learning and play areas, modern STEM classrooms, a two-story student commons, and flexible academic spaces designed to support collaborative learning.

The revised site plan also improves traffic circulation, increases parking, and enhances emergency vehicle access. School officials said the design reflects months of collaboration with teachers, administrators, and staff to create a building that meets the district's educational goals while making efficient use of space.

The committee also approved a preferred entrance security layout modeled after Watertown's elementary schools and the new high school. The project is expected to complete the design development phase this summer.

Updated cost estimates will be presented to the City Council in August, when councilors will decide whether to authorize the project to move into its next phase of design and construction planning.
