Raiders Football Remains Unbeaten, Boys Soccer Earns First Win, Field Hockey Battles Winchester
Watertown High School's fall sports teams opened October with a historic football victory, a breakthrough for boys soccer and a competitive field hockey showdown between two of the state's top-ranked programs.
The Raiders football team improved to 4-0 on Friday, Oct. 2, with a 14-0 shutout of Stoneham at Victory Field. The victory marked Watertown's first win over Stoneham in a decade and its first Middlesex League victory in two years.
Watertown's defense set the tone with a fourth-and-goal stop at the 1-yard line following Stoneham's lengthy opening drive. Quarterback Coleman Keuchkarian-McKeen threw touchdown passes to Shane Garey and Mason Lamacchia, while the Raiders' defense recorded two interceptions to preserve the shutout.
On the soccer field, Watertown's boys team earned its first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Stoneham. Sophomore Micah Mesropyan scored twice in the closing minutes, including a spectacular flying scissor-kick goal, to secure the victory.
The Raiders followed that performance with a scoreless draw against Wakefield on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Watertown moved to 1-0-2 in Middlesex League play as it continued its push toward postseason qualification.
Meanwhile, the sixth-ranked Watertown field hockey team battled No. 12 Winchester to a 1-1 tie Monday afternoon at Victory Field. After Winchester scored early, junior Tyler Foley answered with a goal off a penalty corner. Watertown controlled much of the remaining action but could not find the winning goal, moving its record to 8-1-1.
Looking ahead, Watertown football hosts Wakefield on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. for Homecoming Night, while boys soccer welcomes Waltham to Victory Field on Saturday, Oct. 10, for Soccer Night in Watertown.
