Watertown Presses USPS for Answers on Future of Square Post Office
Watertown officials are increasing pressure on the U.S. Postal Service to restore a full-service post office in Watertown Square as the agency considers permanently discontinuing the former Watertown Financial Branch.
The City Council unanimously authorized a letter to postal officials asking USPS to provide its requirements for a new location, identify sites it has already considered in Watertown Square and meet in person with city leaders to discuss alternatives. More than 700 residents have also signed a city-drafted letter opposing the branch's permanent closure.
City Manager George Proakis criticized the Postal Service's public process, saying the city received no advance warning of the discontinuance study and that several questions remained unanswered following a Sept. 1 virtual community meeting attended by more than 130 people.
City officials are also working with the offices of U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark as they seek a meeting with postal officials and continue efforts to bring full postal services back to Watertown Square.
