Watertown officials celebrated the grand opening of the renovated How Park on Sept. 17, marking the completion of the first phase of improvements to the neighborhood park.

The new playground includes separate play structures for younger and older children, swings, climbing features, benches and a distinctive hot-air-balloon-themed structure.

City Manager George Proakis thanked city staff, contractors and neighbors for their work and patience during construction. He said the project followed months of community meetings, design work and construction.

Additional improvements are planned as part of a future second phase. Plans include new pathways, an expanded and redesigned dog park and upgrades to the park’s half basketball court. The city has not announced a timeline for that work.

The How Park project is one of several park improvements underway across Watertown, with work also planned or underway at Bemis Park, Victory Field and Sullivan Park.
