Watertown Football Remains Undefeated as Raiders Fall Sports Teams Prepare for Postseason
With the fall sports season nearing its conclusion, several Watertown High School teams are positioning themselves for the MIAA state tournaments, led by an undefeated football team, a surging field hockey program and a girls volleyball team making significant strides.
Football
The Watertown football team improved to 6-0 with a hard-fought 15-7 victory over Melrose on Friday, Oct. 16, at Victory Field.
After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, the Raiders tied the game just before halftime when quarterback Coleman Keuchkarian-McKeen connected with Mason Lamacchia on a 10-yard touchdown pass.
Sophomore Max Velazquez delivered the decisive play in the third quarter, breaking free for a 71-yard touchdown run. Jayden Pineda added a successful two-point conversion, giving Watertown a 15-7 lead.
The Raiders' defense held firm throughout the second half, with Velazquez recording a crucial fourth-quarter interception to help secure the victory.
Watertown climbed to No. 2 in the Division 5 power rankings as of Oct. 21, trailing only undefeated Shawsheen. The Raiders have secured a postseason berth and will look to remain unbeaten when they visit Burlington on Friday, Oct. 23.
Field Hockey
The Watertown field hockey team extended its winning streak to seven games Thursday, Oct. 22, defeating Division 1 rival Belmont 1-0.
The victory was especially meaningful for the Raiders, who suffered their only loss of the season against Belmont earlier this fall, falling 2-1.
Watertown improved to 15-1-1 and entered the matchup ranked fourth in Division 3. The Raiders also recorded a shutout victory over Burlington earlier in the week.
With just one regular-season game remaining, Watertown is positioned to enter the state tournament as one of the top seeds.
Girls Volleyball
The Watertown girls volleyball team continues to show significant improvement following several challenging seasons.
The Raiders were ranked 21st in Division 3 as of Oct. 21, putting them in position to qualify for the state tournament if the season ended at that point.
A postseason appearance would mark an important milestone for a program that finished 2-20 in 2025 and went winless in 2024.
Under head coach Tiana Whitmarsh, Watertown has made considerable progress and is hoping to carry that momentum into the postseason.
Girls Soccer
The Watertown girls soccer team delivered one of its most memorable moments of the season during Soccer Night on Oct. 10, defeating Waltham 1-0 at Victory Field.
Freshman Clara Casey assisted sophomore Marlo Murphy on the game-winning goal in the 78th minute, giving the Raiders a dramatic late victory.
Despite that highlight, Watertown has struggled throughout the season. The Raiders were 2-12 and ranked 47th in Division 3 as of Oct. 21, leaving them outside the current postseason picture.
Boys Soccer
The Watertown boys soccer team remains on the postseason bubble following a challenging regular season.
During Soccer Night on Oct. 10, freshman Alejandro Quiroa de Faria scored in the 14th minute to give the Raiders an early lead against Waltham.
Watertown maintained its advantage until the closing minutes, when Waltham scored twice in the 74th and 78th minutes to secure a 2-1 comeback victory.
Despite the loss, the Raiders remained in contention for a state tournament berth, sitting 30th in the Division 3 power rankings as of Oct. 21.
With the regular season winding down, Watertown's remaining results could prove critical to its postseason hopes.
